Reddit comment marketing means answering a question someone already asked in a thread, and naming your product once inside that answer, where it helps the person asking. The comments that stay up would still be the most useful reply in the thread with your brand name deleted.
The bar is high because removal is routine. Between July and December 2025, Reddit removed 154 million posts and comments, about 1 in 14 of the 2.2 billion created1, and an ad-shaped comment often meets a filter before it meets a person.
- Comment where someone asked for options: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "alternatives to X", "is X worth it".
- Answer the question in your first sentence. Then name your product once, next to the other options, with who each one suits.
- Leave the link out unless someone asks for one and the sidebar allows it.
- Read the sidebar before you write. Subreddit rules decide your comment, and moderators enforce them on top of Reddit's.
- Space your comments out, then check from a logged-out window which ones are still up.
If you'd rather not do this by hand, SlopMog finds Reddit and YouTube threads for your keywords every day and drafts a comment for each in the thread's tone, for you to edit and approve.
What a comment that stays up looks like
Here are two replies to the same r/BackPain thread. The first opens with a brand, calls it the best and ends on a discount link. The second answers the question, names three options with who each one suits, and has no link at all.
Side sleeper with lower back pain. Is a firm mattress the answer?
Everyone says go firm. Mine is firm and I still wake up stiff. Budget is about $1,000.
Snoozly is hands down the BEST mattress for back pain. Don't waste your money on anything else. 20% off with my link: snoozly.com/deal
- The brand comes before any answer
- A superlative with nothing to check it against
- A discount link nobody asked for
Firm isn't automatically better for side sleepers. Your shoulder and hip need to sink in a little, which is why medium-firm keeps coming up in this sub. Under $1,000, Snoozly and CloudNest both sell medium-firm hybrids with 100-night trials, and DreamCo's foam model is cheaper if you want to test the idea first. Whichever you pick, give it 3 to 4 weeks before you judge it.
- Answers the question in the first sentence
- Three options, and who each one suits
- No link, and the brand name is easy to search
Run the same test on every comment before you post it. Delete your brand name and reread what's left. If it still helps, the mention is a bonus for the reader, and if nothing useful remains, it was an ad. The test works the same way for comments under the YouTube videos buyers watch.

Pick threads where a mention helps the asker
A product mention helps when the person asking wants options. Four thread shapes ask for them outright: "best X for Y", "X vs Y", "alternatives to X" and "is X worth it". Everything else needs a second look, and most of it is better left alone.
A mention helps
- r/MattressBest mattress for a side sleeper with hip pain?Wants a shortlist, with who each pick suits
- r/MattressCloudNest vs DreamCo, which one sleeps cooler?Wants the deciding difference (a third pick only if it wins on that)
- r/BackPainAlternatives to DreamCo? Mine sagged in a yearWants a replacement that won't do the same
- r/MattressIs a $1,500 hybrid that much better than $600 foam?Wants a verdict with numbers in it
Leave it alone
- r/MattressRant: my delivery took six weeksVenting, not asking
- r/MattressCloudNest won't answer my warranty claimNeeds help with that brand, not a new one
- r/BackPainWeekly check-in: how's your back today?A community thread, not a buying one
One rule covers the edge cases. If you have to bend the question to fit your product in, skip the thread. A sleep-tracking app has no business in a mattress-delivery rant, however badly the poster slept.
SaaS subreddits run on the same shapes, usually phrased as "what do you use for X". Reddit marketing for SaaS lists the subreddits and their self-promotion rules, and finding the threads Google and ChatGPT already use covers where to look.
Answer first, then mention your product
Write the comment in the order the asker reads it. The answer goes first, so they get what they came for even if they stop reading there. Your product goes in the middle with the other options, where it reads as one choice among several.
Tool for a 6-person agency where clients can see progress?

Check guest access before anything else: whether clients can see a project without you paying for a seat. Boardly charges for guests after the first two, and Sprintr gives you unlimited read-only guests who can't comment. TaskPilot lets guests comment for free, which helps if your clients like leaving feedback on the board. Whichever you pick, run one test project with a client before you move everything over.
- Part 1: The answer: the one thing that decides it, in the first sentence.
- Part 2: Specifics the asker can check, including about the other tools.
- Part 3: Your product, once, with who it fits.
- Part 4: A next step that works whichever one they choose.
- Missing on purpose: a link, a discount code, a 'DM me for details'.
Specifics do the persuading. A comment that says what a rival does well reads like someone who has compared the options, and the reader can check every claim in it in a minute. "Hands down the best" gives them nothing to check.
Keep it short enough to read on a phone. The TaskPilot example is four sentences, and a fifth would have been a pitch.
Lead with the insight. If your answer stands alone without naming it, your profile bio does the rest. Most bans come from dropping links or naming your product up front.
Links, disclosure and the sidebar
Read the sidebar before you write a word. Reddit's Rule 2 opens with "Abide by community rules"2, and its spam page leaves it to each community's moderators to decide what counts as spam there3. A sidebar that bans self-promotion bans the helpful version of your comment too.
Leave the link out by default. Your product's name is enough for anyone who wants to look it up, and Reddit's spam page singles out accounts whose contributions are mostly links to a business they run or benefit from3. When someone asks for a link and the sidebar allows it, link the page that answers their question rather than your homepage.
- Yes1.Did someone ask for a link?No →Name it without a link. They can search for it.
- Yes2.Does the sidebar allow links to things you make?No →Name it without a link, and stay inside the rule.
- Yes3.Is there a page that answers their exact question? No →Skip the link. Your homepage answers nothing they asked.
- Link that page once, with the full URL. No shortener.
Some sidebars ask affiliated users to say so. When yours does, a few words at the start of the comment cover it ("I work on TaskPilot, so I'm biased"), and Reddit's Brand Affiliate tag can mark a post or comment as having commercial intent4. If you're posting as the founder from your own account, say so even where it isn't required. People click profiles, and a founder who said it up front gets questions instead of call-outs.
Timing and pacing for Reddit comments
Reply while the thread is young. In the first hours your comment is read by the person who asked and by everyone browsing the subreddit that day. A week later the readers are mostly people who land on the thread from search, which still counts for threads that rank, but the person who asked has probably decided by then.
- First hoursThe person who asked, and the subreddit's feed
- First daysReaders following the thread as replies slow down
- Months laterVisitors from search, if the thread ranks
- Six monthsLocked, if the subreddit archives posts
Archiving is a setting each subreddit chooses. Where it's on, posts lock after six months and nobody can vote or comment on them5, so check the date on an old thread before you write.
Space your comments out. The first example on Reddit's spam page of what may break its rule is "mass-posting repetitive content for the purpose of exposure or financial gain"3, and one paragraph pasted into five threads in an hour looks like exactly that. Backlinko's guide aims for 4 to 7 high-value comments a day6, and plenty of yours should mention nothing you sell.
What gets Reddit comments removed
More than a third of Reddit's post and comment removals in the second half of 2025 came from moderators' automated tools, according to Reddit's transparency report for July to December 20251. AutoModerator doesn't care that your product is good.
Who removed Reddit posts and comments, July to December 2025
- Moderators52.7%
- Reddit admins44.7%
- Not attributed in the report2.6%
How moderators made their removals
- Automated tools such as AutoModerator68.6%
- The rest31.4%
Reddit Transparency Report, July to December 2025: 154,198,211 posts and comments removed, 2,210,675,258 created1. "Not attributed" and "the rest" are what's left of Reddit's own percentages. More than a third is our maths: 52.7% × 68.6%.
Triggers you can avoid:
- A link to something you run, from an account whose history is mostly those links3.
- The same paragraph pasted into several threads.
- An ad's grammar: the brand in the first words, a superlative, a discount code. Readers downvote it, and any of them can report it to the moderators anonymously1.
- A sidebar rule you didn't read, including the account-age or karma minimums some subreddits set for commenting.
Nobody can promise a comment stays up. Moderators can remove a comment for any reason specific to their community's rules1, so a good comment in the wrong subreddit still comes down.
Check which of your comments are still up
Your own view isn't a check, because a removed comment can still look normal while you're logged in. Open each comment's link in a private window, logged out. If it's gone or shows [removed], a moderator or Reddit took it down, and [deleted] means the author did.
Keep a short log of what you posted, where and when, and recheck it after a day and again after a week. If one subreddit keeps removing you, reread its sidebar or stop posting there.

SlopMog runs this check for you. Health checks re-check recently posted comments and show which are still live and which were removed. Comments go out on a staggered schedule, never in a burst, and Reddit comments are posted from aged Reddit accounts. How SlopMog posts and checks comments has the rest.
You edit and approve each draft, or switch a site to hands-free. A regular comment is 6 credits ($0.60), so the $99 Test the Waters plan covers about 166 a month, and the pricing page lays out each plan. Other tools do parts of this job, and Reddit marketing tools sorted by job compares the ones that alert, draft or post.

Questions people ask
What is Reddit comment marketing?
It's answering questions in Reddit threads where your product is a fair answer, and naming it inside a useful reply instead of posting an ad. The comments that last answer the question first, mention the product once next to other options, and leave the link out unless someone asks. SlopMog's free Reddit comment generator drafts one from a thread link and your website, with no account.
How do I mention my product on Reddit without getting banned?
Read the subreddit's sidebar first, and only comment where someone asked for options. Answer the question in your first sentence, name your product once with who it suits, skip the link and space your comments out. Nobody can promise a comment stays up, because each subreddit's moderators decide what fits their community.
Can I post links in Reddit comments?
Yes, if the subreddit's rules allow it. Reddit's spam page singles out accounts whose contributions are mostly links to a business they run, so add a link only when someone asks for one, link the page that answers their question, and skip URL shorteners.
Why did my Reddit comment get removed?
Most often a subreddit rule. In the second half of 2025, moderators made 52.7% of Reddit's post and comment removals, and 68.6% of theirs were automated, by tools such as AutoModerator. Check the sidebar for link, self-promotion and account-age rules, then open the comment in a logged-out window to confirm it's gone.
How many comments should I post a day?
Backlinko's guide aims for 4 to 7 high-value comments a day (updated Jul 1, 2026). Reddit sets no number, but its spam page asks anyone whose contributions are mostly links to their own business to be thoughtful about how often they post. Spread comments across threads and days, and make plenty of them about something other than your product.
Should I say I work for the brand?
Yes, when the subreddit's rules ask for it, and whenever you post from your own account as the founder or an employee. A few words up front, such as 'I work on TaskPilot', cover it, and Reddit's Brand Affiliate tag can mark a post or comment as having commercial intent.
How fast should I reply to a new post?
Within the first few hours if you can, while the person who asked and the subreddit's regular readers are still on the thread. Later replies still reach people who find the thread through search, until it's archived. Subreddits with archiving switched on lock posts after six months.
